15 year old Scarlett Baylis is a sharp and smart mod girl always dressed to perfection, a fine example of the younger mod generation. Today I spoke to her about what the scene means to her, her style and her appearence on the For the Love of Mod documentary.
How were you first introduced to the Mod scene?
I've always been brought up around the music and was introduced by it all by my Dad. Finally watched Quadrophenia a few years back and went away and educated myself into the scene.
You've done an amazing job! After learning more about the scene, what is the most important thing to you about it?
Of course the clothes, the music and the hair are all important but to be honest it's the respect that's given by the older more experienced mods, that really means something to me. I never thought anything about what I was doing, I just did it my way, but the fact that so many mods who have been there and know a lot more than me have past so many great comments just lets you know you're doing something right. That's the greatest compliment of all.
I can imagine it's a great feeling for you! How would you describe your style? Do you stick to original and classic mod styling or do you like to mix it up with modern trends?
I like to keep my hair short, like the original mod girls, but also give it height, I feel a lot smarter with short hair. Recently I'm becoming incredibly interested in the revival styling but always maintain the 60s elements as the originals were great. A smart pair of trousers and a good knit never disappoints. I incorporate both periods of mod and put my own modern twist on it I suppose.
Where do you buy your clothes, have you got any favourite places to shop?
Everywhere and anywhere. I don't care where my clothes have come from as long as they're smart and brilliant. Being young, I don't exactly have a lot of cash to be spending on tailor made clobber so I work with what I've got. I suppose it's how you wear it regardless of it's origin. However I usually find Beyond Retro have what I want when I do have a bit of money.
That's what it's all about, wise words! As well as the fashion, music is a huge part of the scene. What are your favourite songs and how do they make you feel?
It's forever changing! I love any song that can get me to dance with a huge grin on my face. The Small Faces were the first band I really liked and their 'Baby don't do it' is a cracker, always gets me bobbing my head. I do love a song with a story behind how I got it. I found 'Tequila' buy The Champs on 7 inch in amongst piles of vinyl a while back, best quid I've ever spent. I was so chuffed with it! Played it too many time haha. However I'm sure a new favourite is around the corner waiting to be discovered.
You're interviewed in the documentary 'For the Love of Mod' which is due for release. Being only 14 at the time, how did it feel to take part?
It was pretty unbelievable, it all came about so fast. I hadn't a clue what I was going to say as no one had ever asked me about it all before. I'd never actually met another mod my age until earlier this year. It was incredibly exciting to think me of all people were chosen to take part, it was a fantastic experience which I'll remember forever. (Also I felt pretty cool getting in where it was filmed for free because I was apart of the filming crew.)
I bet you met some class people! Have you got many Mod events planned this year?
Still so many more class people to meet! I have a few lined up, Modstock, Modfest, a few gigs in the coming months. I'd love to bring the events to me and organise something of my own though as there's nothing on where I live.
